Windows Mobile: Remote Desktop Client

The last Terminal Services/Remote Desktop client for Windows Mobile devices was released by Microsoft many years ago. The only other options were VNC alternatives. Many hours of searching led me nowhere worthwhile until I came across this. I got all excited!
Remote Desktop allows you to operate one computer from another, eg. allowing you to control your home computer from your work computer over a network connection. This is an easy way to have access to your files, or to receive support from an IT department.
Microsoft released a new version of their RDP software with the release of crossbow. While vendors were offered the opportunity to install this on new devices, many did not take up the offer and left the devices with a little extra free space. It was not released as a download from Microsoft, though I believe they are talking about making that happen at some stage.
Luckily there are some clever people out there who managed to play around with the program from a WM6 device and port it across to a stand alone executable. It is capable of working on WM5 and for those who didn’t get it with their phone, on WM6.
The new version is great stuff. You are able to view your remote desktop in full screen, in bright 16 bit graphics and you can transfer the sounds from the desktop you are using to your device, just as you can do on desktop versions.
The screenshot on the right shows an XP desktop being accessed by the RDP client on a WM5 device. I thought I would push the 801.11b to see what it could handle, playing a small movie with sound through it. It worked well, but it was on a local network. As you can see from the screenshot, the media player window has gone to an appropriate size.
It works exactly how you would expect it should. Download it for free from the pdaphonehome forums, where you can also read a bit more on it.
I use Gooer Remote Desktop Service(www.gooer.com) and it works fine on my mobile phone. But it is not free. Can any one tell me if WM6 client can access the host PC behind NAT or firewall?
Please I need instruction on how to use the WM6 Remote Desktop.
Bill, I will be glad if you can help with procedure of installation of GOOER and how to connect it to my Desktop PC.
Thank you
Hi Abdulrahman
I haven’t played with gooer myself yet. I will give it a try this week. I like the WM6 client though, it works well.
What part of WM6 client are you having trouble with ? Is the program installed ok ? Let me know where you are getting stuck and I will be happy to respond again.
Heres a few tips though.
If it is installed, you should be able to put in the computers IP you want to connect to and off you go.
You will need a wifi connection from your device.
If you are trying to access a computer in a remote network, then vpn or port forwarding will need to be setup.
Ensure remote desktop is enabled on your computer. Right click on “My computerâ€, go to properties and remote settings.
I don’t think I have answered your question, but if you can narrow it down a bit, i will focus on that.
Cheers
Chris
Chris,
Thanks alot. I can resolve the rest from Remote settings. Just where I got lost.
Thanks again.
The remote computer I need to acces is at home. It has XP Home edition. Will that work? Do I just hit the Remote Assitance checkmark?
On the Pocket PC side, I’d like to use this over an EDGE internet service provided by my carrier (Verizon). Has anyone trired it with EDGE?
I don’t know anything about VPN’s or port forwarding. Anybody have instructions on how to set things up in that regard?
Thanks in advance for any help
Having the home version limits you as it is not available to home users. There is no problem using edge from a technical point of view. It’s just the cost of getting that much data down. Ensure your mobile plan will absorb the cost. You might have to head the VNC option.
I don’t know if anyone still reads these posts, but I ran across this because I am trying to connect a WM6 PPC to a Vista Ultimate PC. At the moment, both are running of the same wireless LAN (no port forwarding, just using local IPs), with the intent of moving to port forwarding if I get this to work. I am a bit confused with the setup of Remote Desktop on the host pc with the “Locations” and with the “Object Name.” Here’s what I got without making any setup changes except allowing remote connections: on the ppc I enter the local IP address of the host pc, I enter the local user name and password, I connect, the ppc displays the logon screen that shows vista loading, at this same time the host pc logs off whatever user it may be logged onto. I tried setting up another user account with administrative privelages, I tried adding names to the remote desktop settings, I tried to see if there were other location options (nope) in remote desktop. The problem lies in the “Connect” because as soon as I connect as the local user, it goes to logon screen saying user is logged on but disconnects the host pc from the lan so therefore the host’s IP is no longer what it used to be and the connection is halted there. Should I be connecting as another user, maybe some type of remote user that I don’t know about?
Hi Andrew. I am finding it a bit hard to follow, but I will try to help.
I think it is working correctly. When you connect with your ppc to your desktop, the desktop will log out. It will remain logged out until you log back in. This will disconnect your device. The username should be the same on both.
To access it from another network, you will need to do some port forwarding on your router. The address your type into your device then, will be your routers(ISP) IP address, instead of a local network address.
Let me know if this answers your questions or if I am way off track. I am happy to elaborate on any points.
Hey Chris, now that I look at what I wrote, it does look confusing. The desktop does log out, that is correct. I think the problem is that the desktop connects to the LAN wirelessly, therefore, when I connect to it via the PPC remotely, it automatically logs out AND disconnects from the network, no longer keeping the IP address that I am trying to connect to. I tried to plug in the host’s network adapter directly to the router and I didn’t have this problem. It kept the original local IP address while plugged in directly and I was able to connect remotely. Now I am going to play with port forwarding. Do you know anything about what port remote connections use or which ports I should forward to my pc from the router? I tried the standard “Telnet” service in my router which uses port 23 but it didn’t seem to work.
Hey Andrew, you may want to look into address reservation if your router offers it. You can set each computer to have the same IP all he time with this. Or you could static IP each of your computers. This will mean that you don’t find the wrong computer come up if you turn them on in a different order to last time.
RDP port is 3389. I strongly suggest signing up to DynDNS. It will make your life much easier.
I’ve tried to connect to my notebook, but without success. I receive message 1. the remote computer is not set up for this. 2. reached maximum number of connections. 3. a network error occurred while connecting.
On win xp I selected remote allow users to connect remotely. Does anybody has some advice.
I’m using tytn 2, wm6.
I download the “WM6 RDP-Finster.zip” and installed it on my new Moto Q 9h. I can’t seem to get it to work. It just locks up.
Is there another version that I should try?
Kyle, there is a Terminal services client for Windows mobile, but it was released well before this(many years) and it is lacking in lots of features. Is the locking up the network timing out? Are you able to use it on a local network?
It may be best to try using VNC or another alternative remote desktop solution.
